Below is the process for the project as it is outlined in the process page under the student tab. Following each point is a note to the teacher conducting the project, which should aid in directing students. . 1. You will be given the prompt. ~At this point, teachers should be prepared to give students detailed instructions of the Webquest process. Also, a description of the usefulness and purpose of a pathfinder may give students a better idea of how to begin and complete the assignment.
2. You will conduct research on the 1920's using the pathfinder links. Research topics such as music, clothes, dance, food, transportation, famous guests, and other relevant information you think appropriate for your party.
~Direct students to the links provided in the pathfinder. Show students examples of links on the Library of Congress Webpage.
3. You will create and design an invitation for your Jay Gatsby Party using www.canva.com or traditional pencil and paper.
~Consider making an example project before beginning the unit. This will direct students as well as introduce you to the program and formatting options.
4. You will write a 2-4 page research paper explaining the details of your party. References to primary sources found in the pathfinder must be used and cited correctly in MLA format.
~Show students how to cite the primary source documents from the Library of Congress website in MLA format. 5. You will prepare a brief presentation on your project. You will be required to informally discuss your party plan and the key elements you wrote about in your paper. ~Direct students to the included rubrics.
This is a two week, multidisciplinary project, which incorporates elements of English, Art, and History. Each student will work independently to create his or her own invitation using either the online design program Canva or traditional art supplies such as pencil, marker, and cardstock. Each student will also be responsible for including a research paper that explains the elements included in the invitation and how the primary sources were utilized.
Possible problems may arise as students begin research. It is best if the teacher introduces the Library of Congress website and the primary source documents. Formatting in the design program Canva may also lead to some difficulties for students. By creating a sample invitation, the teacher will have knowledge of the program and be prepared to answer questions as they come up.
For most students, this project will require that they have access to a computer for the entire two week process. The research and paper will encompass one week and the creation of the invitation will encompass the second week.
The teacher conducting the project must be familiar with The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald as well as have experience using the Library of Congress website. A brief introduction to the Canva design program will also be beneficial.
